EZ Tops Granite Mini Slabs are a popular choice for do-it-yourselfers, who want the look of slab granite counters, but are on a budget. Here are some of the frequently asked questions we receive about this product.
Q: What are EZ Tops?
A: EZ Tops are a large format granite tile that is polished and beveled on three edges, which can be installed as countertop surfaces in kitchens, baths, bars, etc.
Q: Are EZ Tops actually granite?
A: Yes. The list of granite choices are the same as you would see in slab. Some popular colors include: Premium Black, Tan Brown, Sapphire Blue, Seaweed Green, Ivory Creme, Mari Gold, Opalessence, Shalimar Gold & Gold Antique.
Q: What size are EZ Tops?
A: EZ Tops are 18″ x 26″ and are polished on one 18″ edge and the two 26″ edges. For homeowners and do-it-yourselfers the 18″ x 26″ size is far easier to install and maneuver, particularly when using a wet saw, which may not accomodate a dimension much wider than 18″.
Q: How thick are EZ Tops?
A: EZ Tops are approximately 1/2″ thick, intended to be installed over a substrate such as plywood and Denshield or Kerdi-board.
Q: Will I have grout joints? How big will they be?
A: Yes you will have grout joints. But, because the tile is polished and beveled, you are able to have tiny grout joints – about the width of a credit card. They are barely noticeable.
Q: Can I install a sink into a counter that has EZ Tops?
A: Yes. It is as simple as installing the EZ Top tile around the area that your sink is to be installed. You will have to cut out a hole in the substrate, most sinks come with a diagram of how large of a hole you need cut for it. Then you install your tile around the hole and set in your self-rimming sink in. Please see our EZ Top Installation Tips sheet for more information.
Q: What kind of grout should I use?
A: Because you are doing tiny grout joints, unsanded grout is best.
Q: How do I figure out how many pieces I need?
A: EZ Tops are intended to be installed with an 18″ width. So, measure the length of the counters you wish to install EZ Tops on and divide by 18″. Always assume that you will need an additional 10% for cutting and mistakes.
Q: Can EZ Tops go over an existing countertop?
A: In some cases, yes. The counters must be squared off at the front edge and square for effective installation.
Q: How do I set EZ Tops?
A: Essentially EZ Tops are installed like any granite tile, with a thinset. Please see our EZ Top Installation Tips sheet for further details.
Q: How do I cut the EZ Tops?
A: EZ Tops can be cut on a wet saw with a diamond blade. These are available at tool rental centers. We do not rent wet saws or do any cutting.
Q: Do we sell molded pieces for an edge finish?
A: No. Since our EZ Tops are polished on three edges, there is no need for expensive, fragile and bulky edge pieces. The flat polished edge of our EZ Tops creates a very sleek, modern edge.
Q: Does Kate-Lo install EZ Tops?
A: No. But, we can supply you a list of tile contractors that are familiar with EZ Tops and they will be happy to bid your job.
